Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 9 of 30

Before I get into my painting, FYI: my local art classes are going to start up again the week of September 19th. Zullo Gallery is a fantastic spot and I'd love to have you join us! Thanks!

Little makes me feel like an artist as much as painting nocturnes. In past 30in30 series, I've painted nocturnes and written about how I find them one of the last things artists have over photographers.

3x3" oil on 5x7" oil paper

Sure, artists can take photos at night, but it's the artist who can really describe the scene vividly. Again, this is inspired by my neighborhood, but with some dramatic liberties because it's fun to take liberties.

Daily Painting posters available

Today I posted the last of the pastels of my #30in30 daily painting challenge for January. Doing a painting every day -- even if I don't do a 6x6" and post on my blog (I am always painting,drawing, and working) -- is such good creative exercise. I can feel myself getting more confident as I venture to new areas and expand my comfort zone.

I also went through the collection of pieces, blog posts, and Facebook entries and am humbled by the support I receive about my work. For those who comment and "like" and share their feelings about the paintings, I sincerely thank you.

The poster is one of the best things about the #30in30 challenge. Seeing the pieces all together like this is such a feeling of accomplishment. Winter is one of my most difficult seasons. For January and much of February I learned that the colors of winter are gorgeous. The light is different and the colors are beautiful!

What I think gets to me the most about wintertime is the light. Time management is tricky generally, but in winter, time management problems seem to double for me. Sun setting at 4pm means I am ready for bed by 8pm. Geez! I don't honestly go to bed at 8pm, but I am not the productive self that I can be other times of the year.

Here is the poster from my September #30in30, the first one that I did. Gosh, it was fun.

If any artist out there is interested in taking on a Daily Painting challenge, please consider doing so. The benefits are many and your capacity to create is bigger and better than you may credit yourself for ;)

Day #3 :: WINTER FIELD :: January Daily Painting Challenge

WINTER FIELD
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"
$125 + $5 shipping

It's chilly and here is another snowy painting. This piece was such fun to do! I started with another notan sketch and then the color laying over it was easy as pie!

Not much to say tonight because Downton Abbey starts up again tonight. And Alaska the Last Frontier. Funny how I watch so little television and then blam, both are on tonight. We'll have nothing else to watch for the remainder of the week (a good thing when a painting challenge is underway!)

OH! And I ordered some art supplies today. Can't wait to talk about those that will be coming in shortly!! :)

Day 15 :: CAFE :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

CAFE
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

$125 + $8 shipping

In a quest to stretch myself from the usual subjects I may be inclined to paint, I took inspiration for today's painting from this past weekend where Tim and I went into Boston to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. We stayed somewhere luxurious, dined somewhere delicious, walked down memory lane, and enjoyed breakfast on Beacon Hill before hitting the Brimfield flea market. You can imagine there's a lot of inspiration to be gleaned from such a great time.

CAFE is from Tatte Bakery and Cafe on Charles Street. While waiting for the most delicious egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich on amazing sourdough bread, I took notice of a few impeccable moments that felt to me like they should be paintings. Perhaps there will be more artwork inspired by our breakfast. We still have half of the month of September to continue to stretch my creative self.

Day 14 :: BOWL OF PEARS :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

BOWL OF PEARS
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

at The Drawing Room, Marion, MA

On my studio shelving sit all of the pastels I've done for this September challenge. When I see them in a group I can assess subjects I should revisit and consider my work as a whole. Some artists approach this #30in30 painting a day challenge as a time to fledge out a theme or concept. Seems to me it's been more a chance to establish a discipline of making time in my life to make art.

This still life is the only one of its kind in the collection of work thus far. I have a lot of landscapes. One animal. One garden. Two architectural. Today is the first still life. I think I'll be revisiting this classic subject.

Day 12 :: FEELS LIKE FALL :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

FEELS LIKE FALL
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

at The Drawing Room, Marion, MA

We live near a special field, as I've posted about before in posts from Day 5 and Day 6. It's such an inspiring place to say the least.
     The sky is big and uninterrupted.
     The grasses grow and are hayed.
     The light is gorgeous each season.

The light has started to change with the seasons. When I was there recently, after the field was partially hayed, the smell was intoxicating and the colors had altered. While the grasses were green there was a tinge of rusty orange. The treetops are drying and the foliage is just starting....

Here is my attempt at catching this first glimpse of a new season. I painted it softly on an archival suede board to help with the fuzzy atmospheric feeling of the day.

Day 2 :: HEN'S PERCH :: #30in30 painting a day challenge

HEN'S PERCH
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"
Sold
Day 2 of the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge is this wonderful Barred Rock hen.

What fun it was to paint all the tones hiding in the gray, black, and white of the patterned feathers.

The best part of painting this, though, was the comb. My pastel box is filled with landscape-painting colors: greens that are abused and often used and assorted values of blue for water and sky.

It was a treat to play with and explore the reds. It is strange to see a completed piece of mine and have it be absent of green!

Put yourself out there

As an artist, I honestly find art shows a bit scary. Having your work out for all to see is an invitation for a response. Talk about vulnerable! I've always felt that by the time you're ready to put yourself out there, you're ready for the response, whatever it may be -- good or bad. It's easy to say but harder to pull it off.

Gallery9 hosted a wonderful group show called "The Great Frame Up" where we had to create a piece to coordinate with a frame we selected in a blind draw -- totally backwards from the norm. When I opened my frame and saw the 1" flat turquoise wood burl I'll admit I knew this wasn't going to be easy. My still life came together well and three judges awarded me 3rd place. Hurray!

BLUE JAR
original pastel, 10x8"
The very next day my work was shown in the Norwood Art Association's 35th Annual Arts in the Park event. Imagine my feeling when I walked up to my piece and saw this blue ribbon on it! The beautiful sunshine-filled day got even better!

For all the painting going on in solitude, it feels quite nice to have my work recognized, and I'm so appreciative.

Art supply order!

After a self-imposed hiatus of nearly two years, I splurged and ordered a BUNCH of new art supplies.

As a pastel painter, I always want to try another brand to see how I like them and if their colors will be the resplendent glories I imagine. The problem is I probably will like them and then I'll simply need EVERY color in the line. Since I began pastel painting in earnest, I dreamed of the day when I'll order the complete set of some brand of my choosing. What a day that will be!

Diane Townsend's Soft Form Landscape sets A and B were my selection this order. They are beautiful and the sticks handle well on the Pastelbord I have and the Hahnemuhle velour paper. Lovely. If there's any negative it's the selection in these sets - a LOT of muddy warm greens that I seem to have too many of in my general pastel collection. If you're looking for a go-to set to bring with you on a plein air painting outing, this would not be my set. Instead I'd bring the Sennelier plein air 80 half stick set. The colors are perfect.

At a workshop with Deb Quinn-Munson, she mentioned that she uses Cretacolor hard pastels rather than Nupastels. I figured I'd give them a shot and so far so good. The color assortment is just beautiful!

Since the pastels arrived I've been squeezing in painting time. So far so good. Love getting new supplies. What a treat it is!

Snow Shadows

This winter took my spunk and buried it under the non-stop snow that wouldn't go away. Now it's spring and the grass is getting greener and everything is in bloom. Perhaps now I can appreciate this pastel for its color and winter-ness.

This piece was FUN! In person the blues in the shadow make me feel the undulation of the land. Love them.

Marsh Morning

Yes. Please, just call me Marsha. I loved making this painting. Each color made me happy happy happy. This particular marsh is the bees knees of marshes. It's up in Newbury, MA and I love it in every season.

MARSH MORNING

original pastel, 20x16"

 Usually one to rush and make hasty decisions, I took this painting slow and deliberately, and I think it shows. At the end, I tried to stretch the local color and make more exciting, exuberant choices. In person, the cobalt, violet, and earthy browns are noticeable in the foreground.

Can't wait to do another marsh!

A Walk on the Beach

This panoramic pastel was painted on a Saturday afternoon in my backyard. Before you think we live on the beach, I painted it from a series of drawings and photo references I had from this great day in Eastham, MA a couple of summers ago.

A WALK ON THE BEACH

I've had such a hankering to do some oil painting, but my pastel supplies were out and I figured I'd give it a go. Today's gorgeous and my kids are on vacation. Perhaps I'll work this up in oil today, again painting in my backyard. Could be a fun study in differences of the two mediums and more practice on my figures -- albeit teeny tiny ones.

"Sunlit Path"

©2013 Kim Morin Weineck
SUNLIT PATH
original pastel, 11x14"

Sunlit Path is one of the pieces on display at the South Street Gallery in Hingham. For the next few posts I'll be showcasing the pastels that are included in the show.

This pastel is from a trip we took to New Hampshire last summer -- it was a sunny, beautiful August day. Tim and I were driving back from Story Land with our little girls and decided to take in the scenery. When driving by this bucolic happiness, I yelled to stop the car, and my husband was already prepping to pull the car to the side.

Love looking at the light in this piece.

Continuation

Abstraction for me seems to be another way of saying "loosening up" because there is no mistaking what most of these small studies are, even though I painted them with less detail.

©2013 Kim Morin Weineck
STUDY No. 8,  4x3"

My exercises continue focusing on color, composition, and on making each mark really matter. Like in the piece above, those dots of red really make the piece for me.

STUDY No. 4,  3X4"

It's hard not to keep going on these. I want to make more detail and explain myself more - yet, when I see these here, it's obvious that they read for what they are without all the extra marks.

The alternating colors activate the space. I like the effect.

Recharging the creative juices

In true me form I paint a lot and then go fallow.
Lately I have been researching subject matter and looking at art.

This photo is from my October show
at Gallery9 October 2012.
My girls are in red with two of my nephews.
Goodness, they make me happy!

This recharging process is filled with anticipation of what could come next.

Believe it or not, I'm thinking it could be some figures.
I haven't painted the figure in FOREVER! But I can do it.

Here are my girls walking out into the rain.
This one looks like a painting already!

Will I take it on? In what medium? We'll have to wait and see.

One thing is certain---
I got a new easel for Christmas and I'm jonesing to use it!

Small works :: Snow Day

My subject matter was pretty consistent with landscapes and such. When I looked around at what was going on in my life, I was inspired to try new subjects from our everyday.

SNOW DAY
original pastel, 6x6"
My girls make snowmen any time there's enough snow. I thought I'd try to paint their latest creation - with some liberties!

This piece is included in the Neponset Valley Artists' Winter Show at the Walpole Public Library.
My painting class, the NVA, is full of talent and I'm delighted and proud to have the work of my students displayed!

If you're in Walpole, MA - stop in and see.

Small works :: Cumulus

Clouds are fun to paint with their flat bottoms and their multiple layers and atmospheric perspective of distance. What a challenge - but a fun one! This pastel was the first of the clouds I had done and sold right away. I reworked another that I posted earlier in this Small Works series. It's fun to revisit a subject because new things are learned the second go 'round.

Small works :: Sky Afire

Despite the fact that I often discourage my students from painting sunsets because it can be difficult to make a sunset painting look believable, here I present another sunset painting! In the previous post I referred to the juxtaposition of dull and bright colors and this is another example of the same theme. In person the colors are brighter and duller simultaneously. Try as I might, this is the closest to accurate I could get.

Notice my friends, the cedar trees, at the middle right of the painting? I also liked the loose details in the distant bank of land.

Small Works :: Eight Cedars

The first pastel I posted was a cedar tree. The second was a cloud. I present you with a hybrid: Cedars and a cloud! In class I often discuss the benefits of working in a series and it's evident I practice what I preach.
