Day 10 :: REEDS :: September Daily Paintings

REEDS
original pastel, 6x6"
©2016 Kim Morin Weineck
$50

Weekend! Day ten! No longer in the single digits with one-third of the month behind me. Today, as mentioned yesterday, here is the same marsh view with some sky. My color in the original is a bit different. The reeds in the foreground appearing like bluish white dots are actually in the bright light orange family. Optimizing photos is difficult and as long as I keep doing daily painting challenges like this, my editing skills are bound to improve.

Feel free to comment on what you'd like to see for the month. I have a feeling more figures are going to appear at some time. Acorn still lifes showed up last September. As I walk the dog early in the morning I keep picking up unique little acorns and thinking of paintings.

We foraged for grapes and elderberries today. The house smells wonderfully of riverbank grapes. I'm not sure if a painting of a wild grapevine would translate. We'll see!

Here's the acrylic. Quick and fun. I'm feeling that it's not quite abstract enough and not quite detailed enough. What will I do going forward? Maybe we'll have a resolution about this for the end of the month. Twenty more paintings to go!

PRICING NOTE:  I am taking risks with this challenge. The work created is about learning and  my pieces are experiments and priced accordingly. Each piece is A BARGAIN at only $50 ($10 shipping if you're not local) rather than $125 for my usual gallery-worthy work. Only my pastels will be available at this time. Email kimweineck@gmail.com to purchase. Of course, thank you!

Day #27 :: SKYLIGHT :: January Daily Painting Challenge

SKYLIGHT
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"
Sold!

Perhaps you noticed I took last night off from painting. My sinus colds really take me out for the count, and I didn't have it in me to give in the studio. (I felt like I was breaking the law!) Instead Tim and I watched an episode of Masterpiece's Home Fires. Have you seen this show? It's a good one, and Tim pointed out that it's peppered with such beautiful greens. It's fun in an artist-household that a predominance of color gets noticed.

This painting came out of me this morning with ease. Ahhhh! I am not sure you can know how much I needed that after the humbling experience that led to my last painting. The nuances of color are better in person, yet again and with my apologies, but this image on the computer gets the message across enough that I'm confident in it.

The second painting of the day will come later. At least for now I'm caught up again.

January is nearly through. I've learned a lot from this challenge and look forward to what I take on next.

Day #23 :: FARM SUNSET :: January Daily Painting Challenge

FARM SUNSET
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"
$125 +$8 shipping

This painting brings me back up to date with the daily paintings. It's a relief. Funny how, while sick and resting, I'm thinking of painting and getting caught up. It was really bothering me!

Today's final painting was the last from this series of three made today all of the same road. (For those local to me, it's Myrtle Street from the corner of Main to Hanover Street by Holmes Field.)

Farm Sunset is the western side of the street and so the sunset was a glorious vibrant fireball while across the street for the previous two pieces you could see the moon in a warm blue sky.

I struggled with the sky in this. As a rule I don't paint sunsets because they always look fake to me when depicted in paintings. I doubt whether the color was that vibrant, that intense, etc. My judgy artist self thinks sunsets are better left to photographers. That is how I felt until I've seen so many beautiful paintings of sunsets by those participating in this challenge! And so I thought I'd try.

The rock wall was such fun to paint. I love the framing it gives to the composition, too.

Here they all are -- from the same ride home, same moonrise and sunset.

Day 17 :: SETTING SUN :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

SETTING SUN
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

$125 + $8 shipping

Whoa! Today was a whirlwind ending with teaching my art class, enjoying our customary afterparty, coming home and heading to the studio. This piece is the only of the 17 that I may have to revisit tomorrow when I look at it with non-tired eyes in the morning.

We live in the best neighborhood! This is an abandoned road near our home. The light was setting and the colors were vivid and lush as they were laid out in streaks across the grasses and pavement. People walking their kids and their dogs were scattered throughout. I added one walker with a red skirt because how could I not?

Day 7 :: FIELD SUNSET :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

FIELD SUNSET
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

at The Drawing Room, Marion, MA

We are a week in to Leslie Saeta's 30 in 30 painting challenge. I'm developing quite a system: Go through the day, Make dinner, Clean up, Kids to bed, talk with Tim, Head to the studio and paint!

The scene I painted today is near our home. We moved to a wonderful suburb of Boston less than two years ago and have been enjoying all that our new neighborhood has to offer. When we originally drove by this field en route to see our potential house, I was struck by this beautiful open land. I recall having had a feeling deep inside that we had found our home because I was supposed to be near this field and find inspiration in it. How funny to have felt that way when we hadn't even seen the house! And yet, here we are. The little wish I made came true.

This is my second painting highlighting this spot. My piece, "Two Trees" from two days ago was from this field. In that piece the trees are out of view of this composition and are sort of three inches to the right off the painting surface.

When I teach on Thursday nights my students often show me some things they are considering painting. We generally get into conversations about light and how the "light story" is foremost. A week into this challenge I am noticing my paintings have a distinct light story. Whew! It's good to know I follow my own advice!!

Day 6 :: MARSH SUNSET :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

MARSH SUNSET
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

SOLD!

It's been a fantastic day and I'm totally tired. We returned home at 8:50pm and helped put the kids to bed for the night, tidied up from our overnight trip, and I came down to the studio and painted this.

It's not quite a nocturne but it's close -- it's the light just before everything is blue and then black with nightfall. It's so warm at this time of day. And light like this is so summer.

And just like that it's Labor Day weekend and summer is over. We'll miss you, to say the least.

Thanks for reading. More to be written here tomorrow. -kmw

Day 1 :: DAY'S END :: #30in30 painting a day challenge

DAY'S END
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"
Sold!

The first day of Leslie Saeta's #30in30 painting a day challenge is a daunting prospect. Staring at September I wonder what my collection will look like at the month's end. Questions come to mind: Will I paint daily? Can I keep up with the demand? How will I find the time? What about Labor Day?

As a mom to young girls starting school this month I have to think I'll be afforded new time. Summer is wonderful but finding time to paint has been its own challenge. We shall see....

DAY'S END is a piece I was jazzed up about when began the painting process. The light was just so. The colors were intense. In my art studio I've been pushing color in terms of hue, value, intensity, and temperature. This composition allowed me to stretch color in all of those ways.

When I was finished I was happy enough to fledge this into a larger piece for an upcoming show in November. Can't wait to show you how it came out!

Small works :: Sky Afire

Despite the fact that I often discourage my students from painting sunsets because it can be difficult to make a sunset painting look believable, here I present another sunset painting! In the previous post I referred to the juxtaposition of dull and bright colors and this is another example of the same theme. In person the colors are brighter and duller simultaneously. Try as I might, this is the closest to accurate I could get.

Notice my friends, the cedar trees, at the middle right of the painting? I also liked the loose details in the distant bank of land.

Small works :: Cloud Strata

Clouds and sunsets in the landscape offer such opportunity for an artist to use colors in bold new ways. This subject had me reaching for the oft-unused sticks of color: orange, magenta, bright yellow (!) and couple them with the grayed blues and greens. Who wouldn't have fun doing that? Want something to appear brighter? Surround it with darker, duller tones. Wham! Bright gorgeousness!!

Small Works :: Red Summer Sky

The same spot as a prior post, these trees silhouetted by the changing sky have been holding my interest of late. So beautiful - and sort of intimidating to paint - and such fun!

Small Works :: Cedar Sentinels

What a time of year...I just love it!

The house is decked for Christmas. We have been cooking and baking and enjoying, and it's not even December yet. As is our tradition, the tree was cut down the weekend after Thanksgiving and here I sit enjoying the comfy house warmly illuminated for these darkest days on the calendar.

In the studio lately I've been working on small works for various upcoming shows. Over the next few days I'm going to showcase these paintings here. Such fun to do these small pieces. So thoroughly enjoyable!

MARSH LIGHT SPARKLES
original pastel, 12x12"
Been busy here working and painting and enjoying my family. It's mid-June and school is out and the weather is just lovely. Feeling in my element! Wish there were more daylight hours and that this time of year would last for always.....

COLORS AT SUNSET
original pastel, 16x8"

Painting-wise pastels have been my medium of choice lately and The Preservation Framer, a great shop in North Attleborough, offered to showcase my work for a spell. It's great to be represented in the town where you live and also support small business in its lovely downtown. (My alter-ego, Downtown Manager with Friends of Norwood Center loves this fact!)

Matt and Rob at Preservation Framer and Gallery and I wanted to ensure the work was affordable during this tricky economic time, so perhaps now is when you should add to or begin your art collection. They sent out the nicest description of my work in their June Newsletter. (Consider subscribing!)

Marshland sunset

The last painting in my marshland series of four, this is the same scene as two posts back, but this time the marsh is at sunset and so slightly lighter than the other. The nuances between twilight, sunset, and dusk are fun to try to capture.

Yesterday I felt like trying to paint was like voluntarily going to the lion's den - I've been so beaten up by my efforts. Late in the afternoon my diligence was rewarded with a painting I can't wait to have framed and shown at the reception, October 7th at Gallery9. The BIG news for me -- drum roll, please -- it's 20x20"! Large!!

Have a great day!
