Day 13 :: SHADE TREES :: September Daily Painting Challenge

SHADE TREES
original pastel, 6x6"

$50
It was bound to happen eventually. Today's acrylic took all my energy, and I love it. It feels like I'm illustrating a book about a farm in Vermont that I love. The pastel needs another 30 minutes but today I'm gassed.

This morning I enjoyed painting at a local cafe. Painting en plein air is fun but tiring. Adjusting to school has been tiring, too. September is a month of transition. Add soccer on top of it all, and I am impressed with myself for making my way down here tonight and working on these two pieces.

Again, "nothing feels as good as doing the work." Tonight as I headed down the stairs to my basement art studio I knew I'd feel as good going back up the stairs as after a tough workout. This month is about my own self-direct art workout, and it does feel good.

The plein air painting from this morning came out nice, too. (You can see it on my Instagram account @kimweineck.) I enjoyed speaking with the most wonderful people who came specifically to support me and with others who stopped by to get coffee and noticed I was there working. The town we live in is full of wonderful folks, and I'm so happy we landed here.

One more word to a friend who I know reads my blog posts: Thank you so much for bringing my dad to Cilla's Coffeehouse to see my work. It was such a treat to have him tell me he saw (and liked!!) my paintings hanging there. I really appreciate it. xxoo

This farm is the same one as my painting from yesterday, in case you were wondering. Magical place, I tell you....

PRICING NOTE:  I am taking risks with this challenge. The work created is about learning and  my pieces are experiments and priced accordingly. Each piece is A BARGAIN at only $50 ($10 shipping if you're not local) rather than $125 for my usual gallery-worthy work. Only my pastels will be available at this time. Email kimweineck@gmail.com to purchase. Of course, thank you!

Thank you for reading (and supporting!) ~ kmw

Day #14 :: WARM SPOT :: January Daily Painting Challenge

WARM SPOT
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"
$125 + $8 shipping

This afternoon I had to pick up our youngest from an after school activity and left a teensy bit early so I could scope out the area near yesterday's painting. I had such fun painting last night's piece, and thought I could take more inspiration from the spot. I wasn't let down.

With sketchbook and camera phone in hand off I went. A quick notan sketch, color notes, and a click from my phone helped to get to this result tonight. Of course after taking the photo I had to go to school, come home, make sure homework was done, clean up, help with dinner, help clean up, etc. etc. before painting. Still, I was excited to see what I could make, and that is such a great feeling!!

When I stepped back and looked at the light in this piece I knew I had got it right. Yay, me! ;)

And I have an amazing painting idea for tomorrow. What crazy color! What beautiful light. We shall see if I can pull it off, but as my friend told me once before an art show, I got this!

Day #3 :: WINTER FIELD :: January Daily Painting Challenge

WINTER FIELD
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"
$125 + $5 shipping

It's chilly and here is another snowy painting. This piece was such fun to do! I started with another notan sketch and then the color laying over it was easy as pie!

Not much to say tonight because Downton Abbey starts up again tonight. And Alaska the Last Frontier. Funny how I watch so little television and then blam, both are on tonight. We'll have nothing else to watch for the remainder of the week (a good thing when a painting challenge is underway!)

OH! And I ordered some art supplies today. Can't wait to talk about those that will be coming in shortly!! :)

Day #2 :: SNOWY TREE :: January Daily Painting Challenge

SNOWY TREE
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

Sold!
Thank you!

January is chilly and snowy so far, but nothing too much that we cannot handle. It's been mild and unseasonably warm until recently. Again, the January painting challenge means I'm inspired by what I'm seeing. This tree was so beautiful with it's thin snowy garment.

Artists always inspire me. Are you familiar with Marc Hanson? Superlatives don't do his work justice. His snowy paintings are impeccable. I think I had his work in mind when I created this piece. It'd be wonderful to take a workshop with him. Perhaps someday!

Day 36 :: WINTER NIGHT :: original pastel by KMW , 6x6"

WINTER NIGHT
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"
Sold!

Late this past winter, I visited a farmer friend in Vermont. She took me on the best ride through her neck of the woods. It was late afternoon when we departed, and as we toured the area the sun went down, dusk settled in, and twilight quickly followed. During those months darkness comes early and so quickly.

There's a magic hour that artists refer to about the light at day's end. In the winter this time is so true to its name. The light dances on things in an enchanted way. The trees I painted appear cold silver against some warmer small trees that were catching the golden light perfectly.

As we came down the small mountain, I stopped the car to take a photo, my friend laughing at the tourist-stereotype-ness of it all. "You know, we all laugh at how people do this here: Stop the car and get out to take photos." And then her friend drove by and was laughing at me standing next to my car in the middle of the road taking photos. What a fun, silly moment. The image I captured. The timing of her friend driving by. The fun we were having. All of it.

And now I love my painting from that moment. Darks are difficult to capture in painting. Sennelier used to sell a great set of darks, and I used them to great effect here. The original piece shows more of the variation from warm to cool, deepest maroon to most intense navy.

So much is happening in my studio right now! I've been talking to someone about art licensing and have a fun idea that had been percolating now getting fleshed out on some illustration board (exciting!). Open Studio is coming up this Friday and Saturday to show my #30in30 for September. It's been something else to figure out how to display the work (30 paintings is a lot.) On Friday, November 6, I have an opening at Gallery9, Norwood, MA. It's an annual show I do. I am going to have to look back and see how many years it's been now. Fun times, for sure!

Day 5 :: TWO TREES :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

TWO TREES
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

Sold!

Day five is a whirlwind --- it's Labor Day weekend and there's fun to be had! I'm off with family for barbecues, walks, conversations, and making great memories.

This painting was fun and a challenge. The entire scene was green! I'm trying to make the color more interesting. My students will also recall that foregrounds are often tricky. The resolution of this one made me quite happy.

Those who live in our happy neighborhood may recognize these two trees. I've painted them before in nearly all seasons. My suspicion is that I'll revisit this scene before the month of September is over.

Small works :: Shadows on the Snow

Ideas often percolate and emerge when they are ready. This painting came about in much this fashion. I've had this subject in mind with differing colors and layout for a spell. It's from a park in the town where I grew up. Love the blue tones in the shadows on the snow.

Small works :: Late Summer Marsh

This marsh on the North Shore of Massachusetts is a continuous source of inspiration for me. A delightful spot with ever-changing color and texture, I get giddy driving there anticipating what I'll see at various times of the year.

Small Works :: Warm Clouds

Marshes are my favorite subject, yet of late I've not painted a lot of them. Tim had started calling me Marsha. Alas, I cannot stay away! In person, the graded color in this work is much smoother a transition and the sky is beautiful (if I do say so myself.)
