Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 7 of 30

My brother married a wonderful woman 15 years ago this month. With a last name like MacIntosh, there is little doubt of her heritage.

My brother composts his grass clippings and other compostables in a big pile hidden by some strategically placed shrubs. During a recent visit, my nephew asked me to see the volunteer pumpkins that have grown from the compost (my favorite part of composting is the bevvy of volunteer plantings). The pumpkins and gourds are great, of course. What caught my eye were the thistles!

3x3" oil on 5x7" oil paper

How appropriate in a house with Scottish heritage that beautiful thistles bloom in their compost!

It caught my eye and I had to paint it, all loose and fun with the sky behind. Something is fun about smooshing around paint. This one was particularly smooshy!

Day #26 :: APPLE :: January Daily Painting Challenge

APPLE
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"
$125 + $8 shipping

We all have these days -- when you aren't in the flow. Wow! I threw away three painting starts tonight. It was hard. It's like my alter-ego showed up tonight in my studio and decided to 'have a go' at pastels.

Ha! The struggle is usually overcome with ability or vision. Tonight I lacked both for a while.

Here is my single apple. The colors are fun. The marks are vibrant. Some of the color notes are unexpected.

Tonight I could have fallen upon my comfort references and painted the landscapes I love. A marsh or a hay field or a beach would have been fun, but I really took the idea of a painting challenge to heart and thought I'd push myself.

After all that challenging work, I'm tired, BUT ----
I'm also quite pleased with my apple.

Day 19 :: HYDRANGEA BLOSSOM :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

HYDRANGEA BLOSSOM
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"
$125 + $8 shipping

This pastel is born from some place I didn't know I had in me. I spent the day in hard physical labor in the glorious September sun meeting some fantastic people and chatting and laughing and talking about and selling perennials at a fundraiser. My daughter fell out of bed last night and when I went to check on her she was laughing. I had to be up and at 'em early, so to say the least I am tired.

The kids in bed, I went into the studio. How odd and lovely to hear the clinking sounds of dishes being finished by my supportive husband so I could get my painting done for today. (I really did marry quite well.)

When I painted the still life of pears earlier in this challenge I spent time working on making something like a pear look painterly and interesting. When the pear was interesting enough I had to then make the bowl and the background also interesting, but not be competitive unless that is what I wanted. The process included decisions, debates, deliberations, trying color, making adjustments and changes.

In class I often discuss how simple subjects can only be painted well by accomplished painters. It's much more difficult to pull off a single anything on a simple surface or background than it is to paint a marsh resplendent in sunlight and shadow in full bloom with reflections and and and and....Like my fun-to-paint colorful full-sun marsh paintings.

And so I have been thinking of this hydrangea that my dear friend gave me on Monday. She said it was the sole blue blossom remaining on her hydrangea bush. My friend so kindly said seeing it that morning reminded her of my wedding 10 years ago, and she wanted me to have it.

It's lovely now to have this painting which will certainly last longer than her thoughtful gift which will sadly fade. It gave me trouble as I painted it -- with its simplicity and light and shadow. In the end, what made it a success was not thinking of the process as intently but instead thinking about all that was behind the subject.

Put yourself out there

As an artist, I honestly find art shows a bit scary. Having your work out for all to see is an invitation for a response. Talk about vulnerable! I've always felt that by the time you're ready to put yourself out there, you're ready for the response, whatever it may be -- good or bad. It's easy to say but harder to pull it off.

Gallery9 hosted a wonderful group show called "The Great Frame Up" where we had to create a piece to coordinate with a frame we selected in a blind draw -- totally backwards from the norm. When I opened my frame and saw the 1" flat turquoise wood burl I'll admit I knew this wasn't going to be easy. My still life came together well and three judges awarded me 3rd place. Hurray!

BLUE JAR
original pastel, 10x8"
The very next day my work was shown in the Norwood Art Association's 35th Annual Arts in the Park event. Imagine my feeling when I walked up to my piece and saw this blue ribbon on it! The beautiful sunshine-filled day got even better!

MARSH RAIN

For all the painting going on in solitude, it feels quite nice to have my work recognized, and I'm so appreciative.

Small works :: Cyclamen Study

Flowers are a subject I don't visit enough. These cyclamen are on our windowsill and the color against the backdrop of the woods is vibrant and fun.

Again I wanted to get messy and work quickly -- I set the timer again. Guesses on how long?

This one I may keep for myself. Or I may go back in and do some more work. Time will tell.

Small works :: Peppermint Candy

For the holidays I do love the look of red and white. Starlight mints are the most perfect showcase of this color duo. Make me so happy!
