Day #1 :: SNOWY FIELD :: January Daily Painting Challenge

SNOWY FIELD
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

$125+ $8 shipping

Happy New Year! It's always busy through the holidays and tonight is New Year's Day and my dad's birthday. The girls will resume school on Monday and, while I feel busy crazy right now, come Monday, normalcy has the potential to resume. Perfect time to do another Daily Painting Challenge facilitated by Leslie Saeta.

The bummer of a January painting challenge could be the subject matter. Today I took our puppy, Hunter, for a walk and here is what I planned on painting tonight. Quick notan sketches in the field made for easy studio work tonight.

Subjects like this are my favorite. Depth. Foreground. Grasses. Color. Hmmm -- the color on this was a challenge and were so difficult to render on my computer. It's day one of the challenge and I'd bet I'll be writing that more often than I care to.

When I paint I strive to communicate a lot through the colors I choose. I want them to be somewhat unexpected. Today I got that right!

Another Venue:: The Drawing Room, Marion, MA

It's exciting when I get to show my work in a new venue. Anthi's Drawing Room is a wonderful place full of curated fine art and other useful and giftware pieces that really make a positive mark on a home. Of particular note to me are some gorgeous copper pans. (If you're reading this, Tim, any of them would be a great gift this Christmastime.)

Stop in if you're in the area of Marion, MA. If not and you find something here you like, please contact them. I know they will ship!

Day 39 :: BLUE CLOUDS :: original pastel, 6x6"

BLUE CLOUDS

at The Drawing Room, Marion, MA

Tonight and tomorrow I'm hosting an Open Studio event at my home studio. When I came up with the idea it was to showcase my #30in30 from September. As the time came to welcome in people to see my work, I got a bit nervous. I'd never had people in to my art-making space like this, and I wasn't sure what to expect.

Well, the last of my guests just left and the night was SUPER! I'm so honored at their efforts to come and support me and my work. Such kindnesses were said. The conversations really were helpful for me in understanding how others see my paintings. It was great to have the feedback. I so enjoyed myself and hope those who came had fun, too.

Tomorrow Open Studio continues from 10am-2pm. It is an understatement to say I'm looking forward to it.

Earlier today I did this painting of that same field in my neighborhood. The marks are quick because I had a lot to do. Still, I loved how it came out. The immediacy of it is sort of neat.

Day 18 :: CHICORY :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

CHICORY

How much can I be inspired by the field in my neighborhood? A lot!

It was an overcast day recently and the blue chicory by the fence made me pause. Tonight, in my studio at 10:16pm I decided to give this recent inspiration a go. At 11:07pm I'm posting it. I'm beat.

Like today, tomorrow I'll be selling autumn perennials at the Norfolk Grange Hall to help fund community programs. If I didn't have to be somewhere at 7:15am, I'd be reworking a few things in this piece (and I still might.) In the meantime, here's my painting.

Foregrounds are tricky. Backgrounds are tricky. Middlegrounds are tricky. And so I'm off to bed.

Day 1 :: DAY'S END :: #30in30 painting a day challenge

DAY'S END
by Kim Morin Weineck

Sold!

The first day of Leslie Saeta's #30in30 painting a day challenge is a daunting prospect. Staring at September I wonder what my collection will look like at the month's end. Questions come to mind: Will I paint daily? Can I keep up with the demand? How will I find the time? What about Labor Day?

As a mom to young girls starting school this month I have to think I'll be afforded new time. Summer is wonderful but finding time to paint has been its own challenge. We shall see....

DAY'S END is a piece I was jazzed up about when began the painting process. The light was just so. The colors were intense. In my art studio I've been pushing color in terms of hue, value, intensity, and temperature. This composition allowed me to stretch color in all of those ways.

When I was finished I was happy enough to fledge this into a larger piece for an upcoming show in November. Can't wait to show you how it came out!

Busy art-filled days

Summer is flying by and this weekend was such a blur my head is spinning.

Starting Friday night art has dominated everything including this very instant as I wind up the weekend with this blog post.

Gallery9's First Friday show was great. Met up with some wonderful people - including someone from high school (thank you, Holly, for coming!) and some family from quite a distance - and sold some work that I'll miss.

Saturday afternoon I connected with Monica Lee of Smart Creative Women. We'd been in touch previously and she had asked me to be interviewed for her website. Saturday was the day and what a great time it was to sit with Monica and talk about art, art careers, and all sorts of things. The interview will air sometime in September. (Of course I'll be letting you know when.)

Sunday wrapped up with some time painting in my yard with the family. My girls played in the yard with the kiddie pool, water table, and slip 'n slide - never did like the slip 'n slide when I was a wee girl it just meant bruises and friction burns but my girls do love it. Tim washed the house. (You read that right - the house. It looks amazing now. Wow, what a job! )

Painting time today was fruitful as I completed a few things that had been sitting waiting to be deemed finished (the part of a painting that I find most difficult.) I completed one piece alla prima, Clouds and Color, and went on to do a wee study of a window box because I've been toying around with working on a large series of works with these window boxes.

I had such fun this weekend and am exhausted. Who doesn't like going to bed spent from a busy weekend? Makes me want to change the sheets, jump into that cool, pristine bed, and sleep like a baby thinking of the promise of the week ahead. Ah....
