Day #4 :: BRIGHT BOUQUET :: January Daily Painting Challenge

Many artist-friends are participating in this daily painting challenge and I'm enjoying looking at their entries. Like so many people, I am constantly thinking and wishing I could paint differently --- someone else's palette of color notes, someone else's marks, someone else's subject matter. 

When it comes to challenges like this daily painting one, there are funny struggles for themes and content, etc. I love the pieces I've done so far (all three of them before today's piece) but they aren't taking enough risks. 

This piece is inspired by what I'd like to be snipping from my imaginary cutting garden (imaginary because we live in the woods and don't really have enough sun [or land] for a cutting garden) for a wonderfully whimsical bouquet. 

What do you think? 

And for those who watched, Downton Abbey was pretty fun, eh? I heard a great comment on NPR today that a critic supposed the show has done well because we all seem to like hanging out with these Edwardian people. As an aside, he mentioned that the scenes and camera-work were so lush. I completely agree. The details are sumptuous!

Day 16 :: RED BARN :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

This barn has lovely funky angles. At sunset the angles are more pronounced with shadows hanging and falling to accent the angles even more. Offset by the lush greens in the landscape and the gorgeous blooms in front, I think it's obvious why I'd have to paint this scene!

Full disclosure: Argh!! This piece caused me a bit of trouble. Red when lightened is often pink or orange. It's pretty tricky. In shadow colors are cooler. Cooler red is purple. I have so many tones here in the barn reds that I am not used to using. My usual color palette wasn't accessible to me for this building, much as I mentioned in the post for the yellow barn.

Apart from the color, the rigid lines of architecture can be tricky to make feel painterly. It's a bunch to juggle. And so this piece sat on my standing desk waiting until I'd try it again. Feels good to have resolved it.

Friends of ours showed me this place and I was instantly smitten. Instantly! It is magical all times of day all times of year. More paintings will come from this place if all goes according to plan. I pray it all works out and soon! (It's fun to be cryptic.)

Recently I bought some new pastels -- the 120 Unison Half Stick set. It's heaven in a box. Beautiful colors. To experiment I tried to push myself with some color. Quite happy with the results.

I've visited this particular subject before and so I enjoyed pushing the color and revisiting it in numerous tries each time making new color experiments. So proud of the blues in the shadows, particularly on the left side. This piece is on archival pastel board and looks more vibrant in person -- if possible!!

Small works :: Starlight Mint

If you have been following my Small Works postings on this blog you will recognize this favorite subject of mine: red and white. My goodness, this wee mint sits on my desk with other treasured still life objects. Once Tim tried to eat it -- I think he still can recall my scream. Ha! Important for future happiness: Don't eat the still life!
