Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 11 of 30

While painting my marsh the other day I had an idea for a glowing underpainting. Today's piece is all about that glow. Similar subject, new approach!

In class I caution my students about "noodling" the work. When you want the underpainting to show, noodling (or overworking) can't happen. Efficiency and confident mark-making are important. Too much smoosh and the underpainting is covered.

Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 10 of 30

The beginning of the month starts with organization and a huge transition -- daily paintings and school starts again. Such planning and time-management skills are in use, and I get lulled into a false sense of security. "I've got this down! A natural time-manager!!"

And now, day 10, and I'm posting at 10pm rather than 7:15am. Took 10 days :)

BUT --- the paintings! I have been having fun and working hard. My show in October is coming up and I need to work for that. I have commissions coming due. I have to get going on those. But these small works have me inspired and wanting to paint all the time.

Daily Painting No. 10 of 30
3x3" oil on 5x7" oil paper

While looking for a piece of paper recently, I stumbled into my filing cabinet that represents my life put away into four drawers all neat but sort of like that last scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. What treasures did I stow away that need to be studied? For a while I remembered everything that was in there, but if I'm honest, that was 20 years ago and things just keep going in there!

I mention this now because I found some work I did while studying in France waaaaay back in 2000. My paintings were neat-o! I was on the brink of something fun. Simplicity. Modern. Ah! Painting everyday for a summer will bring you to a new level.

One painting in particular has me inspired. And so, while working, I'm really thinking a bit differently. Today's painting starts along those lines. Oil is a tricky medium for me. I want to paint FAST but it demands planning from me. And patience. And diligence in getting clean mixtures. Pastel isn't the same for me, but the results I want aren't the same either.

Maybe I'll post some of my paintings I did while studying in France someday. I love to look at them. It was a magical time for me, oddly spiritual and creative and wholly unique. I am blessed to have had such a time.

Reminder: my local art classes are going to start up again the week of September 19th. Zullo Gallery is a fantastic spot and I'd love to have you join us! Thanks!

Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 8 of 30

It took eight days for me to get back to the marsh. It's one of my favorite favorite places to be.
Daily Painting No. 8 of 30
3x3" oil on 5x7" oil paper

The more I paint, the more I enjoy taking risks and chances with my paintings, especially when the works are small. They aren't as precious and decisions stand out.

I need to do more of this on a larger scale!

Day 11 :: QUIET :: September Daily Paintings

QUIET
original pastel, 6x6"

$50
The theme for my daily paintings seems to be "If nothing changes, nothing changes" and forcing myself to make changes.

Today those changes worked out for me. I came into the studio knowing I'd be working on a marsh and wanting to mix it up. Less marks and more defined lights and darks have been on my "I wish..." list for too long now.

QUIET
original acrylic, 18x18"

Do I like the acrylic more than the pastel? I think I do! The underpainting for this piece was full of movement and I tried to keep that same feeling even after paint was layered on top.

Today is a difficult historical day. Art is a wonderful way to slowly process anxiety and a jumble of feelings. It was a welcome time for me to have on a somber anniversary.

PRICING NOTE:  I am taking risks with this challenge. The work created is about learning and  my pieces are experiments and priced accordingly. Each piece is A BARGAIN at only $50 ($10 shipping if you're not local) rather than $125 for my usual gallery-worthy work. Only my pastels will be available at this time. Email kimweineck@gmail.com to purchase. Of course, thank you!

Day 9 :: MARSH REEDS :: September Daily Painting

MARSH REEDS
original pastel, 6x6"

$50
The weekend is nearly here! I'm excited to have the time to get things in order again after a hectic week of school and everything new. Painting-wise, I'm hoping to get up a bit earlier and see about squeezing in my paintings on Saturday and Sunday. (Wish me luck ;) )

Today's pastel and acrylic painting are a little different for me because there is no sky to be shown. When I did small thumbnail sketches to work out the composition I had versions with and without sky. Obviously sky-less seemed more appealing to me.

In the spirit of the posts from the past three days (all from the same marsh spot near our home) I may offer a version of this place tomorrow but with sky. Having a month of daily paintings is a great way to compare and contrast and analyze some artistic tenets. It's true to say that a whole lot of learning is going on!

When it came to the acrylic painting as a warm-up, it's one of the first ones that I really am happy with. And I'm so enjoying a stack of 18x18" paintings and looking at the progression. It's a lot of work but so very worth it.

PRICING NOTE:  I am taking this challenge to heart and taking risks. The work created is a labor of love and learning. For this #30in30 challenge my pieces are experiments and priced accordingly. Each piece is A BARGAIN at only $50 ($10 shipping if you're not local) rather than $125 for my usual gallery-worthy work. Only my pastels will be available at this time. Day 7 :: RIVER VIEW :: September Daily Paintings

RIVER VIEW
original pastel, 6x6"

SOLD!

Today I set out to make a painting early and completed this view from the same spot as yesterday's painting. Marshes make me happy and, since I have been feeling a bit wiped out, why not embrace what I do love to paint?

What do you think? A whole #30in30 of marsh views? I would simply love to do that. Thirty of the same view but taking chances with colors and marks. Hmmm. Food for thought, surely. Marla Baggetta made 100 variations of a same landscape. I was quite inspired by her when I first found this blog post years ago. Would it hold interest (mine and yours?) I wonder....

The pastel was fun to paint, as usual. The colors are exciting to select. SO MANY GREENS! And when I tackle a subject like this SO MANY BLUES (and for both instances: never the right one). A challenge today is to paint something along the lines of yesterday and make it a painting in its own right. It's difficult not to look too much to yesterday.

The acrylic was also fun -- as opposed to yesterday's angst-ridden marsh scene. I was approaching acrylic painting the same way day in day out. Finally I had to tell myself: If nothing changes - NOTHING CHANGES. I held my brush differently and mixed colors differently. The acrylic always comes first in my daily painting regimen. Maybe I stop doing them? So many questions today!

Day 6 :: RIVER :: September Daily Paintings

RIVER
original pastel, 6x6"

SOLD
Day 6 and it's shaping up to be an insanely busy month. School began August 30th and I somehow thought I'd get a jump on things so September would be of ease. Alas, no such luck. I'm drained and may need a pep talk to even start on a painting tomorrow. Content like that is really supposed to make it into blog posts. My bad.

The pastel above was painted after my bold, quick, play with the acrylic below. I am SO IN LOVE with how this pastel looks. The colors, the marks, the scale of the shapes and the rhythm of the darks make me so happy. This is one that I will have a hard time parting with. This is one that I think of when I talk about being a painter of marshes so often that my husband calls me "Marsha."

Working in acrylic and 18x18' is a whole new animal than the 6x6" pastel pieces I have done in the past. It's day six but I have done a stack of 12 paintings so far. These six 18x18" acrylics are interesting. The compelling part of this challenge is that pile. I want to see it grow and I want to improve when it comes to the acrylics.

RIVER

Studio lighting made photographing
this piece a bit difficult tonight.
The reason for the acrylic starts is to take them somewhere different: to play with color and see the composition differently so I don't seem formulaic in my pastels. Honestly, I so enjoy doing the pastels because I can do them with relative ease. When it comes to brushes and color mixing and larger scaled works -- it's not the same. I feel a bit tense.

Today's tension in the studio was palpable. Experimenting with marks and color started happening late in the painting near when the bus was coming. Tomorrow's new piece hopefully will continue where this one left off, because I was nearing somewhere I liked!

PRICING NOTE:  I am taking this challenge to heart and taking risks. The work created is a labor of love and learning. For this #30in30 challenge my pieces are experiments and priced accordingly. Day #8 :: RIVER COLOR :: January Daily Painting Challenge

RIVER COLOR
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"
$125 + $8 shipping

The art supplies I ordered came in and yes, they are pastels. Perhaps tomorrow I'll take some photos of them and link up to where I bought them in case you're wanting an excuse to buy some new color! UPS was to deliver them "by the end of day" and dang it! They arrived at the END of the day --- 4:58pm!

As is my norm when I have new tools, I fall back to subjects that I'm comfortable with to familiarize myself with my new (wonderful) materials. The juncture of land and water is a magical place for me, and I'm always striving to make a painting sing as the actual scene does -- and maybe stretch the color a bit the way I'd like to see it.

This piece is inspired by my neighborhood and is painted on archival suede board. Usually I love the softness the board provides. Today, though, I would have loved the chance to get some straight, hard lines for the reeds. Next time! New surface. Perhaps a Sennelier sanded board. Or a UART mounted board. It's fun to make these decisions.

After yesterday's draining day, it was wonderful to have some support from you. I always end with "thanks for reading" but today there's a deeper meaning in that phrase.

This challenge is shaping up to be a most interesting journey. Puppies and people and still lifes are bound to make an appearance shortly ;)

Day 24 :: AUTUMN DUSK :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

AUTUMN DUSK
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

at The Drawing Room, Marion, MA

It's getting darker earlier and earlier. It's a time of year that starts to make me sad. If I had to find a silver lining to this dark cloud, it's the the color of September light is warm and glowing. At dusk and twilight this warm, glowing light bathes everything, and I immediately have an imperative to paint it.

Tonight as I drove to teach my art class I was compelled to turn around and double back to take a photo of this river as it wend its way through reeds and grasses. The river reflected a gorgeous warm pink in the sky. I ran out and quickly snapped a bunch of photos.

In class we again discussed the idea of successful paintings having a specific light story. If you want to have a successful painting, it's important that the composition include some dramatic effect of the light - like in this piece which speaks to me of distinct warm autumn light.

I'm off to bed. It's the 24th of the month. Only six paintings to go!

Day 13 :: MARSH ROCKS :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

MARSH ROCKS
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

at The Drawing Room, Marion, MA

Last week I was visiting an artist friend in Sandwich on Cape Cod. He took us on a pretty incredible safari to scout out painting locations. This spot is a gem! It was low tide -- really low. The sun was a bright streak in the distance. I think I could still play with the color in the distance on this one.

Thirteen days in and I am noticing some interesting things about the collection as a whole. If you'd like to see them, click on the #30in30 link on my website homepage.

Some of these small paintings are being worked into larger compositions. Wait until you see those -- no sooner than November, if I had to wager a guess. Who knows, though. I'm excited to show what I'm working on and I'm in a new gallery! Be sure to plan to visit Palette Fine Art Gallery if you're near Sandwich, Massachusetts. Comment on this post if you'd like suggestions on where to eat and what to see when you're there.

Day 6 :: MARSH SUNSET :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

MARSH SUNSET
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

SOLD!

It's been a fantastic day and I'm totally tired. We returned home at 8:50pm and helped put the kids to bed for the night, tidied up from our overnight trip, and I came down to the studio and painted this.

It's not quite a nocturne but it's close -- it's the light just before everything is blue and then black with nightfall. It's so warm at this time of day. And light like this is so summer.

And just like that it's Labor Day weekend and summer is over. We'll miss you, to say the least.

Thanks for reading. More to be written here tomorrow. -kmw

Day 3 :: BLUE MOON :: #30in30 painting a day challenge

BLUE MOON
by Kim Morin Weineck
original pastel, 6x6"

$125 + $8 shipping
Day 3 of the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge is a nocturne. Night paintings always get me excited. They are a great example of the artist being more than a camera. We tell our viewer so much that the camera cannot.

Blue is my favorite color, so I love the chance to play with blues. The camera can't capture all the subtleties of this painting.

This painting is inspired by this summer's full moons. The field and river in my painting are well-known to artists in my area. Some call this place "Hunter's Field" after the renowned painter Robert Douglas Hunter of the Boston School who oft painted here. I'm lucky to have met him and had a great conversation a few years back when he awarded me an Honorable Mention at the Adams Farm Paint Out event. I was elated to have him recognize my work. He passed away in October of 2014.

If you're local and want to paint here some day, let's connect! It's a great spot in any season.

MARSH GREENS

Marsh Greens is a pastel of one of my favorite subjects: Marshes! My husband jokes that my name should be Marsha.

There is something wonderful about painting greens and making the painting have space that recedes into the distance. I love that!

Small works :: Late Summer Marsh

This marsh on the North Shore of Massachusetts is a continuous source of inspiration for me. A delightful spot with ever-changing color and texture, I get giddy driving there anticipating what I'll see at various times of the year.

Small Works :: Warm Clouds

Marshes are my favorite subject, yet of late I've not painted a lot of them. Tim had started calling me Marsha. Alas, I cannot stay away! In person, the graded color in this work is much smoother a transition and the sky is beautiful (if I do say so myself.)

Two new pastels

Summer is my productive time, and I've made a pact with myself to finish pieces I start.

These two are a little different for me as I've completed small versions of them in the past but now they are bigger and the colors are different.

THE DRIVE HOME
original pastel, 16x24"

As I've been working in this new larger scale, I've been using up pastels left and right! With all the pastels I own I've also made a pact with myself to use what I have and see what happens.

The result of a "limited" palette is an exploration in new tones. It's been such fun!

MARSH LIGHT SPARKLES

Painting-wise pastels have been my medium of choice lately and The Preservation Framer, a great shop in North Attleborough, offered to showcase my work for a spell. It's great to be represented in the town where you live and also support small business in its lovely downtown. (My alter-ego, Downtown Manager with Friends of Norwood Center loves this fact!)

Color vocabulary: green and white

"All or nothing" seems to be my motto. I'd been working in pastel exclusively for a long spell and then I had a show requiring oil paintings and I took a three-month hiatus from them. Feels a bit funny that I haven't touched a pastel stick since the beginning of the summer.

CLOUDS AND CONIFERS
