Perhaps you noticed I took last night off from painting. My sinus colds really take me out for the count, and I didn't have it in me to give in the studio. (I felt like I was breaking the law!) Instead Tim and I watched an episode of Masterpiece's Home Fires. Have you seen this show? It's a good one, and Tim pointed out that it's peppered with such beautiful greens. It's fun in an artist-household that a predominance of color gets noticed. 

This painting came out of me this morning with ease. Ahhhh! I am not sure you can know how much I needed that after the humbling experience that led to my last painting. The nuances of color are better in person, yet again and with my apologies, but this image on the computer gets the message across enough that I'm confident in it. 

The second painting of the day will come later. At least for now I'm caught up again. 

January is nearly through. I've learned a lot from this challenge and look forward to what I take on next.

BEACH DAY

...This is a painting with PEOPLE! People I know and love, to be exact. In the back is Lucy, running out of the sea while Pippa is combing the beach for shells and such on the sand.

Versions of this painting have been floating in my mind's eye for a while now, and it's been percolating in my head that figures need to enter my paintings. For some reason, this was the one that started it. We'll see what happens next.

A Walk on the Beach

This panoramic pastel was painted on a Saturday afternoon in my backyard. Before you think we live on the beach, I painted it from a series of drawings and photo references I had from this great day in Eastham, MA a couple of summers ago.

A WALK ON THE BEACH

I've had such a hankering to do some oil painting, but my pastel supplies were out and I figured I'd give it a go. Today's gorgeous and my kids are on vacation. Perhaps I'll work this up in oil today, again painting in my backyard. Could be a fun study in differences of the two mediums and more practice on my figures -- albeit teeny tiny ones.

Small works :: Cloud Strata

Clouds and sunsets in the landscape offer such opportunity for an artist to use colors in bold new ways. This subject had me reaching for the oft-unused sticks of color: orange, magenta, bright yellow (!) and couple them with the grayed blues and greens. Who wouldn't have fun doing that? Want something to appear brighter? Surround it with darker, duller tones. Wham! Bright gorgeousness!!

Small works :: Late Summer Marsh

This marsh on the North Shore of Massachusetts is a continuous source of inspiration for me. A delightful spot with ever-changing color and texture, I get giddy driving there anticipating what I'll see at various times of the year.

Small works :: Sun Streaked

Walking on the beach in the off-season is such fun! New arrays of color are everywhere and these colors are  wonderful to capture in painting. In person, the color in the shadow is deep and somewhat unexpected. I've been researching depth of color in shadows and having a great time doing it!

Small Works :: Warm Clouds

Marshes are my favorite subject, yet of late I've not painted a lot of them. Tim had started calling me Marsha. Alas, I cannot stay away! In person, the graded color in this work is much smoother a transition and the sky is beautiful (if I do say so myself.)
