The weekend is nearly here! I'm excited to have the time to get things in order again after a hectic week of school and everything new. Painting-wise, I'm hoping to get up a bit earlier and see about squeezing in my paintings on Saturday and Sunday. (Wish me luck ;) ) 

Today's pastel and acrylic painting are a little different for me because there is no sky to be shown. When I did small thumbnail sketches to work out the composition I had versions with and without sky. Obviously sky-less seemed more appealing to me. 

In the spirit of the posts from the past three days (all from the same marsh spot near our home) I may offer a version of this place tomorrow but with sky. Having a month of daily paintings is a great way to compare and contrast and analyze some artistic tenets. It's true to say that a whole lot of learning is going on!

When it came to the acrylic painting as a warm-up, it's one of the first ones that I really am happy with. And I'm so enjoying a stack of 18x18" paintings and looking at the progression. It's a lot of work but so very worth it.

Today was a busy day: kids are off from school, puppy preparations are in full swing, and the oil painting class I'm teaching began tonight, a pastel painting class starts tomorrow. This ugh cold I've had for nearly two weeks is dragging me down. Studio time has been so important for me. Right when I think I just can't find the energy, I do. The time spent painting is centering and lovely, such a positive in my life I didn't see coming.

This piece is one I love. Greens are always a challenge, and in this piece, they work. I've created space when the contrast was low. It'd a piece with subtle drama. The building was successful because I made decisions and went with them. The marks I made mattered. The colors I chose were right.

For those who know Nantucket, this is Steps Beach, from the top step, on an overcast day. Everywhere you look in Nantucket is a painting -- no matter the weather, time of day, or season.

Day 35 :: SHEEP :: original pastel, 6x6"

Today is the day I almost stopped daily painting. I added another pastel to the small stack of failed figurative pieces and struggled through this one. No excuses, that is how painting goes.

The greens in this painting were fun spring tones. The deeper notes are blues from cobalt to Prussian. I painted this on an underpainting of ochres. My color relationships are analogous, and I don't think I paint in that scheme too often.

The kids have been in school for a month and I'm the last to be dealing with this cold. I'm going to bed nice and early, thinking of better experiences in the studio tomorrow.

Open Studio is this Friday and Saturday, October 9th from 5-8pm and 10th from 10am-2pm. I can't wait to welcome people into my small creative space! If you're in the area, I do hope you try to come visit!

Marsh Morning

Yes. Please, just call me Marsha. I loved making this painting. Each color made me happy happy happy. This particular marsh is the bees knees of marshes. It's up in Newbury, MA and I love it in every season.

 Usually one to rush and make hasty decisions, I took this painting slow and deliberately, and I think it shows. At the end, I tried to stretch the local color and make more exciting, exuberant choices. In person, the cobalt, violet, and earthy browns are noticeable in the foreground.

Can't wait to do another marsh!

Marsh Greens is a pastel of one of my favorite subjects: Marshes! My husband jokes that my name should be Marsha.

There is something wonderful about painting greens and making the painting have space that recedes into the distance. I love that!

"Sunlit Path"

Sunlit Path is one of the pieces on display at the South Street Gallery in Hingham. For the next few posts I'll be showcasing the pastels that are included in the show.

This pastel is from a trip we took to New Hampshire last summer -- it was a sunny, beautiful August day. Tim and I were driving back from Story Land with our little girls and decided to take in the scenery. When driving by this bucolic happiness, I yelled to stop the car, and my husband was already prepping to pull the car to the side.

Love looking at the light in this piece.

Small Works :: Eight Cedars

The first pastel I posted was a cedar tree. The second was a cloud. I present you with a hybrid: Cedars and a cloud! In class I often discuss the benefits of working in a series and it's evident I practice what I preach.

Pastel to oil

Yesterday I tried to paint with pastels. Oh, I wanted them to work!

Instead the first try went into the trash and the second was scrubbed off with a high-pressured hose. 

As is my usual pattern, I went to the studio, put away all my pastels and took out all my oils. The switch is on! Last week I'd used my oils for an afternoon after oiling out paintings in my 'painting graveyard' and figuring out which I wanted to finish (or attempt to finish) for my upcoming show.

The scale of this is a bit skewed,
but the colors feel right. 

Pastels are wonderful things. When I use them my color sense gets honed to a great level. "I need to use a middle value, warm yellow green" and I find it. When I venture back to oil the decisions are helpful. Now I can mix whatever color I would search for in pastel stick. And the great thing about oils: There is always the color possibility you were looking for!

much cleaner than this photo. 

The pastels I attempted yesterday were unsuccessful because of the nuances of color. One image had too much subtlety in the sky blues. My collection of pastels didn't have the colors I needed. Honest. And then there's green. Never the right one in pastel.

Going back to oil yesterday was thrilling. I mean it - THRILLING! 

And I had every green I needed.
