A third of the month is left! I still have a lot to experiment with. Today's painting is about thick paint. If asked if I liked thick or thin paint, I'd have to say that the jury is still out on that.

Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 19 of 30

Today I've been updating my blog with the paintings I've been completing daily this month. Blogging about the work is a nice component to painting because I think about the work a little differently. Blogging isn't fun when you take eight days off and try to catch up ;) 

This painting is about the underpainting. It was orange and I left a lot of that showing. Then I added more to it. I love how it came out!

Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 18 of 30

It's been a struggle to get these daily paintings complete. They are small little works, and I thought they'd be easily integrated into my schedule, but September is a true challenge of time management. 

Mixing color is the name of the game. Painting with pastels is about selecting a stick of pigment and determining color harmonies. Oil painting adds mixing the paint on top of all of it. Fun and difficult as a challenge.

This ominous sky was inspiring. I took it in an abstract route and liked it in the end. The nuances in blue make are beautiful in person. In fact, the whole piece is some sort of blue.

Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 15 of 30

Halfway! Hurray!

My studio wall has a parade of artwork and I'm excited. Halfway feels great. Oils have been challenging me lately. They're slower than pastel and the color isn't as direct. I have to mix it and often it's not as bright or something or other as I'd like. These small works are making a big difference and that's what I'd hoped.

And today is a marsh with notes and color as I've visited in the past, but today it's with more editing.

Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 14 of 30

Last post I discussed color and how fun it can be to see color in the landscape, especially when one color seems to predominate. Green is like this in summer. It's everywhere and in order to make interesting paintings, artists need to look beyond it while also looking deep inside it to make it interesting for the viewer.

Here's a great example of seeing beyond the colors that are there. It isn't green here right now, but it doesn't look like this either. What fun to make a new color vocabulary for a spot! 

Small works this September are giving me space to stretch. I love this!

Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 6 of 30

Past years I struggled to name each painting and this year they get numbers. Wow is this a great change! Each painting has a story, but sometimes those stories don't make good titles.

Today's title may have been something about the dots of yellow in the field. Perhaps something about the way it zings amidst the neutral grasses. As the nights have been so cool, the grasses have gotten beautifully deeper in tone. Funny how neutrals make brights more bright and beautiful!

This again is inspired by my neighborhood. How on earth can we ever move from here. It's heaven!

All the paintings will be available on Sunday, October 1st. I'm hammering out the details and think they'll be on my website www.kimweineck.com on a first-come-first-served basis. Each a bargain at $35 because my wish is that they all find good homes and because they are small treasures of great lessons learned.

Day #7 :: WINTER HOPE :: January Daily Painting Challenge

Today was a difficult January day -- as many days in January can be. Apart from the temperatures, which were rather mild for this time of year, today was about change. Changes that have happened and changes yet to come. 

I went to a wake tonight for a dear former boss. He and his family offered me such opportunity when I was in my twenties. Somehow I knew to work hard for them and see where the opportunities would take me and I went all sorts of places! Nantucket was particularly wonderful. So many years ago now. 

In the end, I could and should credit them with directing me to art school because they owned galleries. I spent my days working for them selling other people's artwork, figuring out what people wanted to buy, and studying what I sold. 

Funny how paths make sense in hindsight. 

Today we also got news of a family member's diagnosis. When you're hoping more than you can hope that it's not cancer and then it is....And I have no other words. Only prayers and making art. 

When I'm not sure what to do or when I feel lost or apprehensive, making art helps. 

Today's piece was a challenge again. Simple in construct, this solitary tree with some depth in the flat plane against a treeline and an oddly colored sky isn't as complicated as say a marsh with a dramatic sky and boat and and and... Simple in art is never simple. Instead simple is often a nightmare. How can it be done in a simple fashion and still feel professional/deliberate/confident/finished/etc? It takes some doing and experimentation to get there. 

My notes and reference weren't these colors, but when I painted them as they were there was no hope in the grays and dull browns. Those tones are for another day. Instead, what fun for me to empurple (a great word and joke for my art students) and redden and warm up the color notes! 

The piece is now more hopeful in its feeling. I kept at it with layer upon layer and finally arrived at a place I love for my painting and my head.

Sometimes when I paint I am stuck with being a slave to reality. The thing with art is that I don't like paintings that are strict interpretations of what is seen. The paintings I respond to are the ones that interpret reality through the artist's filter. Funny how there is a disconnect when I start to paint and amp up the abstraction meter. My inner critic starts to question.

With this piece I tried to make marks that informed the viewer enough about what was happening. The lighting was important in this piece, and the colors I chose reflect that time of day. The marks I made are strong and informative.

In the end, I love this piece. My husband said it's one of his favorites. The blues in the distance aren't as zingy as they are in this post. Eventually my Photoshop skills will be up to that task.

Smart Creative Mom: It all matters

Recently I was at an art show discussing the artwork on display, some of it mine, with someone I had never met before that night. The exchange of dialogue went something like this –

Art Lover:  I’ve been a fan of your work for a long time. It’s so nice to finally meet you in person.
Me: (a little dumbfounded) That’s quite nice to hear. (More pleasantries were exchanged.)
Art Lover: When you posted this painting on your blog, I enjoyed your backstory about what drew you to  make this piece. I’ve had similar experiences and it was great to learn you did, too.
Me: It’s funny how that often happens.

Yesterday this was in my email in box:

Online Follower I didn’t know I had: I want to register for your August Workshop in Vermont. It sounds like such fun, and I’m excited to take a class with you after following you and your work on line for a while.
Me: That’s great! I’m glad you’re excited about it, too! It’s going to be such fun!

A comment on one of my paintings I’d pinned to my Pinterest pin board read:

“This is beautiful. Is it for sale?”

These three examples proved something to me:  It all matters. “It” is the effort you make to put yourself “out there” in that place (often scary if you’re doing it for the first time) for others to see and offer their response.  As a mother of two young girls, doing this is a question of managing my time.  For the short amount I have to myself, I want to spend it making art rather than marketing it!

What I’ve learned is that marketing doesn’t take a ton of time. Just get it done – something. Period.

* Write that blog post about what you’re doing (it can be quick and short!)
* Post something on your Facebook page. (Don’t have time? Share something great in your feed!)
* Sign up for an Instagram account and photograph some pictures of your process.
* Create a Pin Board on Pinterest of things you’re doing – this can be ANYTHING at all!

Whatever your method, do something to show off your talents! Don’t put it on hold. When you hit “publish” or “send” it doesn’t go into the ether. Someone is noticing. Some days the effort to be visible is tantamount to climbing Everest, but when you start, you’ll find it’s more of an anthill. Your work is too special to be kept quiet. SHOUT IT OUT!

Art supply order!

After a self-imposed hiatus of nearly two years, I splurged and ordered a BUNCH of new art supplies.

As a pastel painter, I always want to try another brand to see how I like them and if their colors will be the resplendent glories I imagine. The problem is I probably will like them and then I'll simply need EVERY color in the line. Since I began pastel painting in earnest, I dreamed of the day when I'll order the complete set of some brand of my choosing. What a day that will be!

Diane Townsend's Soft Form Landscape sets A and B were my selection this order. They are beautiful and the sticks handle well on the Pastelbord I have and the Hahnemuhle velour paper. Lovely. If there's any negative it's the selection in these sets - a LOT of muddy warm greens that I seem to have too many of in my general pastel collection. If you're looking for a go-to set to bring with you on a plein air painting outing, this would not be my set. Instead I'd bring the Sennelier plein air 80 half stick set. The colors are perfect.

At a workshop with Deb Quinn-Munson, she mentioned that she uses Cretacolor hard pastels rather than Nupastels. I figured I'd give them a shot and so far so good. The color assortment is just beautiful!

Since the pastels arrived I've been squeezing in painting time. So far so good. Love getting new supplies. What a treat it is!

STUDIO SALE!

After organizing and rearranging my studio space I have decided to clear out some work that hasn't found a home. The larger works are being donated to the Art Connection (check them out - a great organization) and the smaller ones I'm offering here until Friday, July 27, 2012.

How exciting! My painting was awarded the Pastel Journal/Ampersand Art Supplies award. 

Do you know what this means? A bunch of wonderful pastelbords from Ampersand. I can't wait to get painting on all of them! A year's subscription to Pastel Journal was part of the award, too. It's a favorite artist publication of mine, so it's pretty perfect. 

Continuing with the good news, there is a small dot on the tag of my piece.

 I used Nupastels and Sennelier pastels on Sennelier Pastel Card with some of the new Richeson Semi-hard pastels which had arrived by FedEx this week as well. Having new supplies really can be an impetus to make art. I couldn't wait to try them out!

Coming soon: five blog posts of note

I read recently that there are five blog posts that every artist should write.

Feel free to link over to the website and read what was said or continue reading here for my synopsis.

Wow. These are some pretty heady topics and ones that will be fun to answer.

One thing I've learned is that nothing really should be taken as a 'given' because everyone is approaching life from different perspectives. We're all bringing different things to the table.

When teaching, I would often use the word "just" as in, "Well, you just paint it like that" or "You just paint in the grass there." There really isn't any place for 'just' in this context. Students aren't in my head and sometimes it may be more than 'just' doing something. It warrants explanation.

And these concepts for blog posting deserve explanation, too. I can't say I'm going to post them in order as listed here, but I'm going to discuss all five of them.

Welcome!

Here is my new blog and here's to new beginnings!

After years at my former blog, I've started anew. For a while I'd been toying with the idea of a new start since so many things had changed since I had begun blogging. When I had learned that my email associated with my blog had been hacked, it seemed like as good a time as any to make the jump.

It's been a good stretch of time with many changes in my life:

I closed my store, breton bleu studio, named for my time studying in Brittany.
I got married--Yay, Tim!
We bought a cute little yellow house on the corner.
I had two daughters, Lucy and Pippa.
I began selling my artwork in new locations.
I founded the Neponset Valley Artists.
I became Gallery Director at Gallery9 in Norwood, MA.
I was juried into the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod as a signature member.
I was accepted into the Pastel Society of America.

And so it was time for a fresh start! I hope you'll come along!
