Halfway! Hurray!

My studio wall has a parade of artwork and I'm excited. Halfway feels great. Oils have been challenging me lately. They're slower than pastel and the color isn't as direct. I have to mix it and often it's not as bright or something or other as I'd like. These small works are making a big difference and that's what I'd hoped.

And today is a marsh with notes and color as I've visited in the past, but today it's with more editing.

Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 11 of 30

While painting my marsh the other day I had an idea for a glowing underpainting. Today's piece is all about that glow. Similar subject, new approach!

In class I caution my students about "noodling" the work. When you want the underpainting to show, noodling (or overworking) can't happen. Efficiency and confident mark-making are important. Too much smoosh and the underpainting is covered.

Daily Painting Sept 2017 :: No. 10 of 30

The beginning of the month starts with organization and a huge transition -- daily paintings and school starts again. Such planning and time-management skills are in use, and I get lulled into a false sense of security. "I've got this down! A natural time-manager!!"

And now, day 10, and I'm posting at 10pm rather than 7:15am. Took 10 days :) 

BUT --- the paintings! I have been having fun and working hard. My show in October is coming up and I need to work for that. I have commissions coming due. I have to get going on those. But these small works have me inspired and wanting to paint all the time.

While looking for a piece of paper recently, I stumbled into my filing cabinet that represents my life put away into four drawers all neat but sort of like that last scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. What treasures did I stow away that need to be studied? For a while I remembered everything that was in there, but if I'm honest, that was 20 years ago and things just keep going in there!

I mention this now because I found some work I did while studying in France waaaaay back in 2000. My paintings were neat-o! I was on the brink of something fun. Simplicity. Modern. Ah! Painting everyday for a summer will bring you to a new level. 

One painting in particular has me inspired. And so, while working, I'm really thinking a bit differently. Today's painting starts along those lines. Oil is a tricky medium for me. I want to paint FAST but it demands planning from me. And patience. And diligence in getting clean mixtures. Pastel isn't the same for me, but the results I want aren't the same either.

Maybe I'll post some of my paintings I did while studying in France someday. I love to look at them. It was a magical time for me, oddly spiritual and creative and wholly unique. I am blessed to have had such a time.

The theme for my daily paintings seems to be "If nothing changes, nothing changes" and forcing myself to make changes. 

Today those changes worked out for me. I came into the studio knowing I'd be working on a marsh and wanting to mix it up. Less marks and more defined lights and darks have been on my "I wish..." list for too long now.

Do I like the acrylic more than the pastel? I think I do! The underpainting for this piece was full of movement and I tried to keep that same feeling even after paint was layered on top.

Today is a difficult historical day. Art is a wonderful way to slowly process anxiety and a jumble of feelings. It was a welcome time for me to have on a somber anniversary.

The weekend is nearly here! I'm excited to have the time to get things in order again after a hectic week of school and everything new. Painting-wise, I'm hoping to get up a bit earlier and see about squeezing in my paintings on Saturday and Sunday. (Wish me luck ;) ) 

Today's pastel and acrylic painting are a little different for me because there is no sky to be shown. When I did small thumbnail sketches to work out the composition I had versions with and without sky. Obviously sky-less seemed more appealing to me. 

In the spirit of the posts from the past three days (all from the same marsh spot near our home) I may offer a version of this place tomorrow but with sky. Having a month of daily paintings is a great way to compare and contrast and analyze some artistic tenets. It's true to say that a whole lot of learning is going on!

When it came to the acrylic painting as a warm-up, it's one of the first ones that I really am happy with. And I'm so enjoying a stack of 18x18" paintings and looking at the progression. It's a lot of work but so very worth it.

Day 6 :: RIVER :: September Daily Paintings

Day 6 and it's shaping up to be an insanely busy month. School began August 30th and I somehow thought I'd get a jump on things so September would be of ease. Alas, no such luck. I'm drained and may need a pep talk to even start on a painting tomorrow. Content like that is really supposed to make it into blog posts. My bad. 

The pastel above was painted after my bold, quick, play with the acrylic below. I am SO IN LOVE with how this pastel looks. The colors, the marks, the scale of the shapes and the rhythm of the darks make me so happy. This is one that I will have a hard time parting with. This is one that I think of when I talk about being a painter of marshes so often that my husband calls me "Marsha."

Working in acrylic and 18x18' is a whole new animal than the 6x6" pastel pieces I have done in the past. It's day six but I have done a stack of 12 paintings so far. These six 18x18" acrylics are interesting. The compelling part of this challenge is that pile. I want to see it grow and I want to improve when it comes to the acrylics.

this piece a bit difficult tonight. 

The reason for the acrylic starts is to take them somewhere different: to play with color and see the composition differently so I don't seem formulaic in my pastels. Honestly, I so enjoy doing the pastels because I can do them with relative ease. When it comes to brushes and color mixing and larger scaled works -- it's not the same. I feel a bit tense.

Today's tension in the studio was palpable. Experimenting with marks and color started happening late in the painting near when the bus was coming. Tomorrow's new piece hopefully will continue where this one left off, because I was nearing somewhere I liked!

Day 13 :: MARSH ROCKS :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

Last week I was visiting an artist friend in Sandwich on Cape Cod. He took us on a pretty incredible safari to scout out painting locations. This spot is a gem! It was low tide -- really low. The sun was a bright streak in the distance. I think I could still play with the color in the distance on this one.

Day 10 :: MARSH FOG :: #30in30 Painting a Day Challenge

It's day 10 and it's quite something to see my paintings all lined up on my studio shelf. If you'd like to see my work for this September challenge, take a look at my website and click on the #30in30 page. I'm uploading my new paintings there nearly daily.

When I look at my #30in30 paintings I am struck by the amount of contrast of dark and light that comes through. When my students discuss possible painting subjects, one constant we discuss for success is that the work should have a distinct light story. When a piece is from sunset it's easy to know the light story is the drama of the brilliant sky against the darkening land.

Sometimes the light story is that there is no light story. This is acceptable as long as it's deliberate. In today's painting the marsh is fogged in. The greens in the distance become blurred together. There is little contrast. It's a great study in greens and edges and feels like fog. In essence it's the perfect explanation of a light story telling  a deliberate story of having little light. In this foggy day, the light story is diffused.

It's been a fantastic day and I'm totally tired. We returned home at 8:50pm and helped put the kids to bed for the night, tidied up from our overnight trip, and I came down to the studio and painted this.

It's not quite a nocturne but it's close -- it's the light just before everything is blue and then black with nightfall. It's so warm at this time of day. And light like this is so summer.

And just like that it's Labor Day weekend and summer is over. We'll miss you, to say the least.

Ah, spring and marshes! These things make me so happy!! After a winter that beat us all up here in the northeast, it's nice to see sprigs of green popping up.

This piece, SALT MARSH SPRING, was painted from memory -- a big thing for me. I also pushed some color and had SUCH FUN doing so.
