It's OPENING DAY at Fenway so spring must be here! It was such fun to paint detail without adding too much detail. In the end love how this piece came out. Hope you do, too.

Small works :: Snowy Hillside Path

Pieces of paintings make me giddy sometimes. The bottom left of this one gives me a shot of adrenaline. Love the looseness and edges.

SNOWY HILLSIDE PATH

Love the color palette in this, too. It's snowy without being the expected blue tones. The light violets evoke just enough chill.

STUDIO SALE!

After organizing and rearranging my studio space I have decided to clear out some work that hasn't found a home. The larger works are being donated to the Art Connection (check them out - a great organization) and the smaller ones I'm offering here until Friday, July 27, 2012.

Please email me/comment/call to let me know if you're interested in anything. I hope to hear from you.

Sold items have been removed from this post.

Which leaves nothing left.

Perhaps we'll visit this again nearer the holidays.

With thanks for your support of my work.
Happy summer!

6x6" Pastels for summertime

It's been a great summer weatherwise and artwise. Setting up my easel in the backyard and overseeing my young girls play is like a sort of art utopia which seems to get my creative juices flowing!

These 6x6" pastels are something I love to do. When seen together I am really excited about how they look.
If you're interested in any, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the gallery that has them. Each is $125 framed to 10x10" in a simple squared gold frame with a white mat.

An award-winning piece

My painting, Sunlit Hay, was accepted in the national juried show, For Pastels Only, sponsored by the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. I'm honored to be a signature member of this pastel society.

When I arrived at the show I found this below my painting:

How exciting! My painting was awarded the Pastel Journal/Ampersand Art Supplies award.

Do you know what this means? A bunch of wonderful pastelbords from Ampersand. I can't wait to get painting on all of them! A year's subscription to Pastel Journal was part of the award, too. It's a favorite artist publication of mine, so it's pretty perfect.

Continuing with the good news, there is a small dot on the tag of my piece.

It sold!
It was such fun to have this recognition at this wonderful show featuring so many talented artists' work.

Four square pastels

Four new pieces, from drawings and references I've worked on in the past: Marshes!

©2012 Kim Morin Weineck
MARSH WATER
original pastel, 6x6"
In person, the colors are better, so I must improve my photo taking/editing. Perhaps I can blame it on the non-stop rain we've had. Colors are better in sunshine!

MARSH STREAM
original pastel, 6x6"
All four pieces are painted on gray PastelMat, not my favorite surface to paint on, but I had seen Christine Bodnar's demonstration and figured I'd revisit it.

MARSH TREE
original pastel, 6x6"
With a water wash to create an underpainting, I enjoyed the process a lot.

MARSH SHADOWS
original pastel, 6x6"
Not bad, but I'd like them to be more lively and colorful. I can work on that! Like I said, I'm blaming the rain!

Three pastel studies

Here are three pastels I did recently. All are small, approximately 5x5", and all have a sort of overcast feel to them.
BLUE BOAT
original pastel by Kim Morin Weineck
5x5" (c) 2012

I created these small studies to experiment with using new lower chroma colors and to play with the intensity of the colors in the pictorial space.

FOG AND ROSES
original pastel by Kim Morin Weineck
5x5" (c) 2012

Mind you, these foggy, quirky light source pieces are a bugger to photograph. In person they read much better. Photographing my pieces is something I'm constantly working to improve.

TURQUOISE BIKE

5x5" (c) 2012

Making these paintings was a fun exercise, and, as ever when I push myself, I learned a lot.

Trio of new works

This week I squeezed in some time to complete these three small pastels.

AUTUMN STROLL
original pastel, 6x6"
I used Nupastels and Sennelier pastels on Sennelier Pastel Card with some of the new Richeson Semi-hard pastels which had arrived by FedEx this week as well. Having new supplies really can be an impetus to make art. I couldn't wait to try them out!

BACKLIT AUTUMN
original pastel, 6x6"
The Richesons are lovely, but there's a learning curve while I familiarize myself with their specific properties. Some of the colors thrill me and others I have to learn how to incorporate into use.

BIKE REST
original pastel, 6x6"
It's fun to explore new materials and experiment with techniques. Can't wait to find some more time to keep up the exploration!

Four pastels

Today I stopped in to Gallery9 and Julie, the owner, was excited about the four new pastels I brought in to show her. Hurray!

Later today I got these photos in text messages from her.

She liked them well enough that they are already framed! Stop in to Gallery9 to see them or contact me for more information.

I love how this one looks!

Part of me doesn't want anyone to buy the panorama. Perhaps there is a wall in my house which could be a perfect home for it.

Color vocabulary: green and white

"All or nothing" seems to be my motto. I'd been working in pastel exclusively for a long spell and then I had a show requiring oil paintings and I took a three-month hiatus from them. Feels a bit funny that I haven't touched a pastel stick since the beginning of the summer.

CLOUDS AND CONIFERS
original pastel, 16x12"
These three pastels were done in quick succession, and I was pleased with them. During the summer I worked to enrich my color vocabulary in greens and whites. Seems that I was delving into this study with these three!

BEACH BIKE
original pastel, 16x12"
All are 16x12" and are all done on PastelMat archival pastel boards. If you're a pastelist and haven't tried PastelMat, you really should. It's smooth and yet somehow holds pastel as if it were gritty sandpaper - utterly contrary!

Each of these pieces is available at Gallery9 in Norwood for my show opening October 5, 2011.
