Watercolors of art supplies

As mentioned in yesterday's post, I've been creating new work for a show at Gallery9 using watercolor and mixed media to get the creative juices flowing. Last night's fruit studies and still lives (just can't make myself write "lifes") ended with a simple watercolor of a paint brush.

Today I was eager to get back at these paint brush paintings.

I figured I'd work in a few other treasures from my studio.
My awl is a go-to framing tool.
Of course the ever-present Sharpie marker in assorted colors can be found as well.

Blue is my favorite color and my artist pencils tend to be these Mars Lumograph pencils in just about every hardness they make. When I searched for a classic yellow No. 2 pencil, you know, like a Ticonderoga -- the classic -- I couldn't find one. Only these blue guys.

Lucy joined me for the afternoon painting session. She was ADORABLE to paint with. See her assortment of 'junior' art supplies? She organized them just so. I was proud of her work and her diligence. I'm biased but still!

Lucy and I enjoyed painting together today.
What an amazing afternoon we shared.

She even did some paintings of paint brushes, prompting me to do a painting of her brush. How are kids supposed to make a masterpiece and feel like they're any good at painting when their brush gets splayed and horrible and is made of plastic shards that feel like mono filament/fishing line?

My brushes are old and worn and cared for.
Watercolor is a medium that requires good materials to make a difference in your outcome.

In person these paintings look so much better. Try as I might, this is the best I could get them to look here.

Generally I don't use a fan brush but that doesn't mean I don't have one.
Nor does it mean they aren't good painting fodder. It's pretty cool-looking for a paintbrush.

My students in the Neponset Valley Artists will love this one of my teensy weensy brush, the double zero, 00, or double aught. Mine is so worn out and tweaked at the end from sitting in water just a spot too long.

Still makes for a fun painting.

Mixing it up

After focusing so intently on pastels for a spot of time, it was a nice mental break to switch to something utterly different: illustrations in mixed media.

For these works on board I used pencil, colored pencil, watercolor, watercolor pencil, iridescent pastels, ink, sharpies, my daughters' art supplies of all sorts, and perhaps something else I am forgetting....

Julie at Gallery9 has asked me to do some work in a different vein for a show coming up Friday, August 3rd. I always am up for the challenge to see what can be produced under a time crunch.

These are fun illustration art for me to do and making them is oddly exhausting.

At a local art show

Tonight I went to an art show at the Preservation Framer and Gallery, a perfect local gallery in my home town.

An assortment of work at the Preservation Framer
including Christopher Flanagan and
Sarah Brousseau (column and right)

Rob and Matt do such a great job with their shop and their shows. What a wonderful curated collection of Non-Representational work this was!

Fred Smilde's work at the Preservation Framer

People braved biblical rains to attend, and I had fun meeting the artists and engaging in wonderful conversation about the art.

Matt Slobogan, Jason Hancock, and Fred Smilde's work at the Preservation Framer

What fun it was.  During the show I met the high school art teacher for North Attleboro, Christopher Flanagan. He was showing some of his paintings and earlier photos. His former student, Sarah Brousseau, was showing her work as well. How much fun is that?

The gallery hosts shows as well as an assortment of other artists' work on their opposite wall featuring something for every taste and budget. (I sound like an ad - but it's the truth!)

Lindsey Nygaard does wonderful paintings,
including these six  raven studies.
When I walked in Rob was taking down a raven painting someone had just purchased.

And this is my assortment of work. Seeing it together is makes me a bit excited.

While I was grabbing some wine, Rob pointed out that one of my pieces had sold, an added bonus to a great night.

If you're local to North Attleborough, make it a point to stop in to the downtown gallery.

Which leaves nothing left.

Perhaps we'll visit this again nearer the holidays.

With thanks for your support of my work.

6x6" Pastels for summertime

It's been a great summer weatherwise and artwise. Setting up my easel in the backyard and overseeing my young girls play is like a sort of art utopia which seems to get my creative juices flowing!

These 6x6" pastels are something I love to do. When seen together I am really excited about how they look.
If you're interested in any, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the gallery that has them. Each is $125 framed to 10x10" in a simple squared gold frame with a white mat.

An award-winning piece

My painting, Sunlit Hay, was accepted in the national juried show, For Pastels Only, sponsored by the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. I'm honored to be a signature member of this pastel society.

When I arrived at the show I found this below my painting:

How exciting! My painting was awarded the Pastel Journal/Ampersand Art Supplies award.

Do you know what this means? A bunch of wonderful pastelbords from Ampersand. I can't wait to get painting on all of them! A year's subscription to Pastel Journal was part of the award, too. It's a favorite artist publication of mine, so it's pretty perfect.

Continuing with the good news, there is a small dot on the tag of my piece.

It sold!
It was such fun to have this recognition at this wonderful show featuring so many talented artists' work.
