Day 4 :: WINDBLOWN :: September Daily Paintings

Simplify! This mantra is repeated and repeated whenever I paint. Today I think I took it to heart. I love how this looks. Clean and placed and deliberate. The pastels have me pent up and focused on detail.

The sparkle obviously continues to haunt my mind. Can you blame me?

Working larger and in acrylic with tubs of paint makes for different effects. I'll discuss them more in a future post. Mark making, color choices, and economy of brushstrokes are all on my mind. On day 3 of all this work I am starting to feel a change. Come October, it'll be great to look back!!

I'm so busy with the holiday weekend and celebrating Labor Day and our anniversary weekend fun. I'm cutting this short but am happy that I got a painting in. Yippee!

A Walk on the Beach

This panoramic pastel was painted on a Saturday afternoon in my backyard. Before you think we live on the beach, I painted it from a series of drawings and photo references I had from this great day in Eastham, MA a couple of summers ago.

I've had such a hankering to do some oil painting, but my pastel supplies were out and I figured I'd give it a go. Today's gorgeous and my kids are on vacation. Perhaps I'll work this up in oil today, again painting in my backyard. Could be a fun study in differences of the two mediums and more practice on my figures -- albeit teeny tiny ones.

Small works :: Cloud Strata

Clouds and sunsets in the landscape offer such opportunity for an artist to use colors in bold new ways. This subject had me reaching for the oft-unused sticks of color: orange, magenta, bright yellow (!) and couple them with the grayed blues and greens. Who wouldn't have fun doing that? Want something to appear brighter? Surround it with darker, duller tones. Wham! Bright gorgeousness!!

Small works :: Bird Island

As an artist-member of the Marion Art Center I'm invited to contribute artwork to their shows. The Holiday Shop is a favorite! Bird Island is the local lighthouse and looking at this painting makes me pine for summertime. Ahhhhh.

Small works :: Sun Streaked

Walking on the beach in the off-season is such fun! New arrays of color are everywhere and these colors are wonderful to capture in painting. In person, the color in the shadow is deep and somewhat unexpected. I've been researching depth of color in shadows and having a great time doing it!
