In the works

On my Facebook page I teased that I'm working on a big project.

It is a big project for me, but honestly I should have rethought posting it as a teaser. The project starts with web and ends with site. Probably not that exciting to anyone but me.

A website is a big undertaking because what feels like millions of decisions must be made. Exhaustive process, but one that is overdue. I'm working on getting my professional artist house in order and it feels great to do.

For the site, I completed these three watercolors just this morning. Larger than real-sized supplies, they really are fun things to paint. The detail pulls me in! In the future, my aim will be a looser interpretation of them. Today, this is what came out of me, happy to say.

Quick pastel study

One of the things I struggle with in my artwork is looseness.

The beginning of a piece is marked with such an exuberant energy - akin to Anne of Green Gables looking out at the new day with no mistakes in it...yet. Then the marks start. And those marks continue and overlap and blend and continue and continue.

This piece was made quickly and with an intention to loosen up.

Now I'm not sure what to do with it - do I refine the front? Does it read correctly?
Excitedly I'm happy with my story in greens. I'm a landscape painter so that's a good thing!

Dropping off at The Art Connection

I was there to drop off my two donated paintings.

here I am with my eyes closed. Thank goodness she shot a few photos.

Thank you to The Preservation Framer for donating the framing for the piece I'm holding. Both works have already been placed in a community service organization, and I'm thrilled to know they will be enjoyed.

Busy art-filled days

Summer is flying by and this weekend was such a blur my head is spinning.

Starting Friday night art has dominated everything including this very instant as I wind up the weekend with this blog post.

Gallery9's First Friday show was great. Met up with some wonderful people - including someone from high school (thank you, Holly, for coming!) and some family from quite a distance - and sold some work that I'll miss.

Saturday afternoon I connected with Monica Lee of Smart Creative Women. We'd been in touch previously and she had asked me to be interviewed for her website. Saturday was the day and what a great time it was to sit with Monica and talk about art, art careers, and all sorts of things. The interview will air sometime in September. (Of course I'll be letting you know when.)

Sunday wrapped up with some time painting in my yard with the family. My girls played in the yard with the kiddie pool, water table, and slip 'n slide - never did like the slip 'n slide when I was a wee girl it just meant bruises and friction burns but my girls do love it. Tim washed the house. (You read that right - the house. It looks amazing now. Wow, what a job! )

Painting time today was fruitful as I completed a few things that had been sitting waiting to be deemed finished (the part of a painting that I find most difficult.) I completed one piece alla prima, Clouds and Color, and went on to do a wee study of a window box because I've been toying around with working on a large series of works with these window boxes.

I had such fun this weekend and am exhausted. Who doesn't like going to bed spent from a busy weekend? Makes me want to change the sheets, jump into that cool, pristine bed, and sleep like a baby thinking of the promise of the week ahead. Ah....

Focus on light

The other day I tried a new surface for me with pastels: velour.

Wow! It was a wonderful experience for me who has a heavy hand and has a hard time making things look soft.

When I try out new supplies, I generally work on something that feels familiar to me. In this case I went with my hay bales, but I've also had a great time with my standard marshes. (Did I mention Tim threatened to start calling me "Marsha"?)

This new surface had me all aflutter. Wow did I ever have a great time! Quickly departing from my comfort zone I started up on new pieces focusing on light, color, temperature, and all that good stuff.

Light plays a major contrasting role in what I decided to paint, even in this Beach Grasses piece below where it plays a more subtle part than in the one above.

This night we were on vacation and suddenly I needed to go for a walk. So glad we all did! Behold the most glorious sky I ever did see! More paintings of this subject to come, be sure.

Always liking to do a smaller piece, I figured I'd take a shot at a smaller, slightly altered version of the earlier Sunlit Path. Small works are such fun!

These works are all available at Gallery9. I'm nervously looking forward to hearing the feedback to them.

Watercolors of art supplies

As mentioned in yesterday's post, I've been creating new work for a show at Gallery9 using watercolor and mixed media to get the creative juices flowing. Last night's fruit studies and still lives (just can't make myself write "lifes") ended with a simple watercolor of a paint brush.

Today I was eager to get back at these paint brush paintings.

I figured I'd work in a few other treasures from my studio.

My awl is a go-to framing tool.

Of course the ever-present Sharpie marker in assorted colors can be found as well.

Blue is my favorite color and my artist pencils tend to be these Mars Lumograph pencils in just about every hardness they make. When I searched for a classic yellow No. 2 pencil, you know, like a Ticonderoga -- the classic -- I couldn't find one. Only these blue guys.

Lucy joined me for the afternoon painting session. She was ADORABLE to paint with. See her assortment of 'junior' art supplies? She organized them just so. I was proud of her work and her diligence. I'm biased but still!

What an amazing afternoon we shared.

She even did some paintings of paint brushes, prompting me to do a painting of her brush. How are kids supposed to make a masterpiece and feel like they're any good at painting when their brush gets splayed and horrible and is made of plastic shards that feel like mono filament/fishing line?

My brushes are old and worn and cared for.

Watercolor is a medium that requires good materials to make a difference in your outcome.

In person these paintings look so much better. Try as I might, this is the best I could get them to look here.

Generally I don't use a fan brush but that doesn't mean I don't have one.

Nor does it mean they aren't good painting fodder. It's pretty cool-looking for a paintbrush.

My students in the Neponset Valley Artists will love this one of my teensy weensy brush, the double zero, 00, or double aught. Mine is so worn out and tweaked at the end from sitting in water just a spot too long.

Still makes for a fun painting.
