Day #5 :: ENAMEL PITCHER :: January Daily Painting Challenge

The kisses of color on the flowers isn't white like you may see in this image, but instead, are a gorgeous deep salmon-tinged pink. Then again, the angle of my monitor may have something to do with how this painting looks to others. I'm never sure. 

There are parts of this piece that I am in love with: The dark part where the negative space of the flowers meets the pitcher as well as the dark lip of the pitcher. Oooh! I like that part. Also the colors of the pitcher. The strokes are loose and fun not all bound in a straight jacket like I'm often one to do to my marks. 

As much as I love flowers, I don't paint a lot of them. The entries for the past two days have been fun challenges. The good news is that they're challenges. Without a challenge there is no growth. 

For a spell, I've felt something in me percolating. I want to make some hybridized artwork of fine art skill with freestyle design. I'm thinking that pieces like this are my segue. Although as I look at this piece now, I think it's certainly less of the freestyle design/illustration than I may be inclined to go in the future. It's a process and I'm feeling the forward momentum!

When it comes down to the nitty gritty of it -- who are we painting for? I'm often torn.

Temperature

It's nearly summer - a lovely mid-June with still so much goodness and light yet to come. We've had days that you dream about and lately a lot lot lot of rain. (Did I say there's been a lot?) Whenever the weather has cooperated I've been out painting on our patio. This small piece was completed last week, right before the onslaught of rainy days.

DIANNE'S FLOWERS

Lately I've been interested in amping up my color and pushing the boundaries of warm and cool temperatures in my work. A sunlit window box of gorgeous flowers with some warm, raking light was the perfect place to explore some color theory. With new pastels at my disposal, it was wonderful to consider warm greens vs. cool greens, warm whites and cool whites, the temperature of the blue, etc etc. 

Can't wait to do it again!!

Talk about tricky! This pastel was painted directly - meaning there wasn't any underpainting - and was a challenge to say the least.

In my classes I've been stressing light and color temperature, groupings and clusters of things like hydrangea blooms, and reflection. This construct has it all and then some. I learned a lot with this and can't wait to tackle another linear piece like this. Usually I do more organic shapes in the landscape, and this was anything but that!

Busy art-filled days

Summer is flying by and this weekend was such a blur my head is spinning. 

Starting Friday night art has dominated everything including this very instant as I wind up the weekend with this blog post.  

Gallery9's First Friday show was great. Met up with some wonderful people - including someone from high school (thank you, Holly, for coming!) and some family from quite a distance - and sold some work that I'll miss.

Saturday afternoon I connected with Monica Lee of Smart Creative Women. We'd been in touch previously and she had asked me to be interviewed for her website. Saturday was the day and what a great time it was to sit with Monica and talk about art, art careers, and all sorts of things. The interview will air sometime in September. (Of course I'll be letting you know when.)

RED REFLECTED

Sunday wrapped up with some time painting in my yard with the family. My girls played in the yard with the kiddie pool, water table, and slip 'n slide - never did like the slip 'n slide when I was a wee girl it just meant bruises and friction burns but my girls do love it. Tim washed the house. (You read that right - the house. It looks amazing now. Wow, what a job! )

CLOUDS AND COLOR

Painting time today was fruitful as I completed a few things that had been sitting waiting to be deemed finished (the part of a painting that I find most difficult.) I completed one piece alla prima, Clouds and Color, and went on to do a wee study of a window box because I've been toying around with working on a large series of works with these window boxes.

I had such fun this weekend and am exhausted. Who doesn't like going to bed spent from a busy weekend? Makes me want to change the sheets, jump into that cool, pristine bed, and sleep like a baby thinking of the promise of the week ahead. Ah....

There's nothing like lilacs

It was a busy weekend here.

We hosted a Mother's Day breakfast which has been our tradition for the last five years. On Saturday Tim and my uncle also installed replacement windows upstairs. After six years in our house we can actually open the windows in our bedroom easily. Isn't airflow nice?

The colors of spring get me so happy and nothing is as wonderful as lilacs - my favorite flower on earth. There's a bush down the street in a parking lot which is my go-to spot for my lilac fix. Right now the house smells wonderfully of these happy flowers because we have four large bouquets scattered about.When I started bringing in the bouquets Tim said he said he could see I was in my glory, surrounded by all this fragrant purple.

We have a lilac bush out front but, try as I might to follow all directions for pruning to encourage a gazillion blooms, it's pretty lackluster. My solution this year is going to be neglect. Let's see next year how that works!
